I'm guessing this would go here because it's behavior. Mods feel free to move it.

The back story is that I put Pepper in boarding for a week so I could move Travis to Florida (I'm still in Michigan). Soo when I picked her up, 2 big changes. A week without her routine, and daddy's missing. Oh, and I have a bad case of bronchitis, so I'm not acting like myself.

The first day home, she was tuckered out, as expected. She played in the evening, and went to bed early. That was Thursday. Since then, it seems she has caught on to daddy not coming home, and does nothing but sleep. Or it could be the boarding. She's still eating the same amount. She has also lost all of her house training. I've turned to preventive potty trips outside for the time being while I re-train her.

My question is, is this the boarding throwing her off this much, or is it the fact that an alpha from her pack is missing? We had family watch her for the same length of time when she was younger and she did fine. But both of us also came home, too.

I'm concerned because Travis is coming home in 2 months, but it will only be for 2 days. I don't want to have to do this all over again if I can prevent it.

Help!

It's the boarding. It's a little like shelter dog syndrome - they lose their training and often don't show to their best to adopters as they get depressed or scared. I'm assuming she was boarded in a run but normally lives in a house. Plus dogs are such pack animals that big changes can really upset them. The Peanut, my velcro boy, literally SCREAMED when I came home from 5 days in Atlanta earlier this month. Hubby said he was very unenthused and not very playful the whole time I was gone.

Just give lots of loves, she'll bounce back.

p.s. that's assuming she's healthy - if you are concerned about that do a vet run.

Thanks. I guess I'm just worried because she gets wierd when one of us works late or goes away for a couple days. I hope she will get over it soon. I'll stop worrying then.

She's a sensitive soul and probably you should just stay home with her all the time (grin). I am sure she'd love that!

I agree with Gwacie.... I think the behavior change is temporary. Some dogs take to boarding better than others... sounds like Pepper may actually be experiencing a tad bit of depression. But she'll get over it. When my husband is gone, my little doxie "Lil' Bit" whines the entire time. She never really settles totally down. She is HIS dog and although she loves me, she doesn't do well when "her" human is not in the mix. Each dog is different...I hope she'll be ok in a few days.

Yep, I agree with the above. My pups love to go to "camp" - I don't tell them it's the kennel - but they have each other. However, when they come home they are exhausted and sleep for a couple of days. Your Pepper is still young and I think it's the change in routine. She probably also senses you are not 100%. The kennel would definitely interrupt the potty training progress.

Now, any answers on what to do about my feeling depressed these days? Oh wait! I know -- the Jamboree!!

You will enjoy the CGC class immensely! I didn't take the class... just took the test. But I know many who have and they say it's lots of fun. Good luck to you!

Thanks. On a good note, her tail has been up today, not wagging, just up. It wagged when we went to petsmart, so I know she's gettin there.
