I've been reading all of the conversations going on here since my husband and I got our rat terrier, so I thought it was about time I introduce myself. Our pup's name is Baxter, he's about 4 months old and he's a rat terrier mix. We got him from a family who had several puppies, but I don't think they were really what you would call "breeders". I think their dog just had puppies. Anyhow, we've been working on crate training, house training, and still trying to fit in fun time with the guy. The crate training was a huge challenge at first, although he is doing much much better now. The house training has also come leaps and bounds (which I'm sure is tied to the crate training). My husband and I work opposite shifts for now, so someone is almost always home with Baxter. I do have a couple of questions, though...

We're getting to the point where he is out of his crate much more often now, but is it ok to keep him in his crate when we can't be watching him directly? When we first got him (about 3 weeks ago now) he'd go to the bathroom in the house the first chance he got when we weren't looking so we had to increase his time in the kennel. Now he spends probably half of his time during the day in it, which I think is a great improvement. My goal is that as he becomes more accustomed to going to the bathroom outside and not inside, the more time he has outside of his crate with us and the less direct supervision he needs. Good??

My only other question for now is about exercise. It seems that this guy never wears out!! So we've been walking with him quite a bit. I usually do about 45 minutes every day with him and my husband jogs with him probably 3 times a week for about 10-15 minutes. I've read that too much exercise can be bad for puppies. Are we pushing Baxter too much? I just know that a lot of times bad behavior stems from a lack of exercise so i'm trying to avoid that.

Ok I lied -- one more question. I've been reading in your posts that rat terriers are very intelligent, so I'm trying to challenge him mentally more often. I've been trying to train him to sit and stay with hand signals, but after about 5 minutes or so he seems to lose interest. Am I doing too long of sessions, is it because he's still a puppy, or is my furbaby not as smart as the rest of ya'lls? haha.

Thank you guys for your input. This board has been a great encouragement for me that his training wil eventually progress!!

Welcome to you and Baxter! Puppies have short attention spans. I think you should keep the training sessions to about 5 minutes at a time for now, a few times a day. Give him tons of praise when he gets it right.

Hi, and welcome to you and Baxter!!!! So glad you found us We want to see pics of your baby!!!!

For your questions:

I couldn't be a bigger proponent of crate training. It can be, quite literally, a life saver -- for your dog, and for your peace of mind And it is, IMO, the single biggest asset to housetraining, especially for a puppy. Not only is it ok to keep him crated when you can't watch him directly, that is EXACTLY what you should be doing. If you can't see him to IMMEDIATELY correcth im for misbehavior, he won't learn. And you need to be able to watch him for signals to go outside, so that you can IMMEDIATELY get him there and offer praise for good behavior. Immediateness is KEY. Plus, I think it's extremely important that a dog be crated during times the people are at home so they don't associate it with everyone being gone. Makes it much easier for them to "love it".

As for the exercise, what you're doing doesn't sound too bad, though 45 minutes at one stretch may be a bit much for a 4 month old pup. Perhaps you could break it up into two shorter sessions. Often the key for what a dog gets out of walk isn't the time or the distance, but the way the walk occurs. Are you working on keeping him at your side with you obviously being the one leading the walk?

I agree that 5 minutes is probably long for training sessions and that his attention span may not allow for much more than that. Are you giving him verbal cues along with the hand signals. I believe, and I'm sure Nora can tell you correctly, that that is how you start off..with a verbal command as well as the hand signal and then eventually you can just use the hand signal.

Hello and welcome!
Because Baxter is still a puppy and still isn't fully house trained, it might be best to keep him crated when he isn't supervised so that you don't find any presents you didn't know of before, and so that he doesn't get into anything he shouldn't.
Sorry, I don't know much about exercise, but I don't think you're pushing him, so long as he isn't panting and gasping by the end of the walk.
It could be that he just gets bored easily with long training. Try doing a little bit of training every day, and have a treat on hand for him (that should get his attention!) One thing I like to do with my dog, Sam, to challenge him is to take some cheese and melt it inside his Kong toy. He has a fun time trying to get it out and it keeps him busy for a while.

Joleighs like that with the exersize thing..even when shes playing its like she NEVER gets worn out, act as if she's never ever gonna get to do it again and gotta get it all out now.. eventually i would just stop and bring her on the couch or bed w/ me and lay with her, within a few minutes she'd pass out.. so i think its more of a matter of them not wanting to miss anything, as long as they have something to do, they will. I doubt its bad for him unless he seems miserable.

Welcome to you and little Baxter. Sounds like you're doing a lot of things right and have been given some excellent advice already. Keep up the good work. I have two little females. Button is 4 and little Zipper in my avatar is two. Sounds like Baxter is getting plenty of exercise, but these little dogs can wear you out the first two years. some are more energetic than others. Button wore me out until she turned nearly two. I would play fetch with her rubber toys late night to wear her out enough for her to go to sleep at bedtime. Thankfully Zipper is much more laid back, being a shelter rescue, and most eager to hop into bed at bedtime. Probably because she never had a bed as a stray.
