We have a wonderful 2 year old neutered male Rattie.  He's perfect in every way except one - he won't let my husband get near me!  He's devoted to me, and normally he gets along great with my husband - until he starts kissing me, then our sweet dog begins barking and trying to bite my husband.  We've tried calming him, scolding him, shutting him out of our bedroom (he jumped at the door until he finally got it open)...  He is a rescue and very sensitive to scolding.  Any suggestions for dealing with this?

Bailey is the same way. When Shane trys to kiss me Bailey goes crazy jumping up and barking. In order for us to get alone time we have to lock him out of our bedroom....but he barks the entire time we are by ourself. The only thing that works for us is giving him a busy bone or a bone that he loves but once he has eaten it he starts barking again. I think I may need some help too LOL

You need to turn the basic care of the dog over to your husband... especially the feeding. Make sure everything positive the dog gets comes from your husband. Your husband needs to be the one taking your dog out to potty... and playing fetch with him. I would NOT play tug of war with him.

When you two are close, it would be smart for the time being to crate the dog and not allow him the opportunity to exhibit any unacceptable behavior. If the dog is very sensitive...I would always try to make sure the opportunity isn't provided for the dog to do anything unacceptable, versus correcting the dog after the fact.

Do not allow the dog on the bed with you and your husband... or on the couch... at least for the time being.  It's time to set some boundaries, and you can do it without being harsh on the dog... but you do need to be assertive and firm.

Like Nora said, take take a rear seat when the man of the house is around. Let only him walk her, feed her, let only him provide all treats and toys. Remind him not make jerky movements around her, not to bend at the waist over her (can be seen as a human aggressive stance), not to stare or maintain prolonged eye contact with her (done by dogs before a fight) and never to raise his arms/hands with palm down or lift feet/legs abruptly near her, as prior men may have used hands to hit her, or legs/feet to kick her. Sadly, with rescues, we never know what has "gone before".

Also ask men in your home use a low, gentle, quiet voice around her.  Let hubby be the person who takes her to the park, walks her around the block, takes her for rides. In other words, let him kinda take over the role of care-giver. This will do much toward his winning over her trust. I think in time, and with your coaching male visistors to your home on how to act around her, she will quickly  overcome this fear.  Ashley with little Mocha will probably chime in here with some input, too.  She dealt with similar issues with her rrecent resue puppy.

I'm so lucky my rescue Zipper came with no "baggage" regarding humans.  Her only baggage is with other dogs and cats. She no doubt tangled with a few when she was stray!

Thanks for the input.  Ironically, our dog's name is Romeo!!!

First, we do not crate him because his foster parents felt that he was traumatized by being crated for 12 hours or more at a time by his first owners.  He's completely housebroken, not destructive and gets along well with our cats, so we've never confined him. He's hyper-sensitive, eager to please and learns very quickly.

Also, my husband often works 12 hour days, which makes it difficult for him to be the primary caretaker.  Romeo loves my husband, is very excited when he comes home, loves to play with him, and spends much of the evening on my husband's lap.  He doesn't have issues with men, and gets along with everyone - even the mailman!

OMG I can SOOOOOO relate! Yaz will not let my husband and I near each other. My husband also works long awful hours so he can't be her primary caretaker. Shutting the bedroom door isn't an option since she would make an awful racket and wake the kids so then what's the point? She has slept on our bed since day one so it's a little late now to break that and I like having her snuggle with us on the couch. I do love the term furry chastity belt.

Hi and welcome to the site! It sounds like he has gotten ultra attached to you. Buddy is that was but not to the extent that you have. I think that sometimes it can become a game to them. I would advise crating, but that may not be an option since he may be traumatized. I wish that I had more suggestions.

Anyway, would love to hear more and of course-pics! ;-)
