Line breeding is when you breed with a distante relative like Grandparent, uncle, aunt ect.

I've only been involved w/ Rat Terriers for less than 2 years now, but line breeding is a very common practice with Doberman Pinscher breeders---many people believe that the best qualities in that particular bloodline can be kept and not diluted if line breeding is done.  But, you wouldn't want them to be too closely related, or continue indefinitely that way, I wouldn't think.  Selective breeding sometimes requires linebreeding to get exactly the looks/personality traits you're trying for.
