Hubby has this dish he fixes that he calls goulash.  It is browned ground beef, a can of diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, shell or elbow macaroni, and various spices.  Sometimes he throw in a can of corn too.

So what is your goulash recipe?

LOL, and to "fancy it up" Hubby will sometimes put it in a casserole and bake it with cheese on top

Goulash to me is similat. Basically some crushed tomatoes, tom. sauce, ground beef, cheese and spices.

I think the "authentic" version is supposed to be way different though.

OMG!  A friend and co-worker brought me over some goulash, and I  just ate it for lunch and came on here and saw this thread!  LOL!

Elbow mac, ground meat (turkey, beef) tomatoes, peppers, onion and garlic... it was yummy.  I'm thinkin about picking up stuff and making it for dinner!!

Here's hubby's recipe:

Get out the huge iron skillet and brown about a pound of ground beef. Drain the grease.

Add salt, pepper, paprika, garlic and whatever other spices you feel like adding.

Add 1 can petite diced tomatoes and 1 small can of tomato sauce.  (He also used Manwich sauce once.)  You can add a can of drained corn too.  Simmer for a while.

Boil 1 package of some kind of noodle like elbow macaroni or shell macaroni according to package directions.  Drain the water.

Add the meat mixture to the drained macaroni, stir.

Oh wow, totally not what I grew up on. I'm half Hungarian. Mom makes it with chunks of beef, lots of paprika (which is where the red comes from no tomatoes), potatoes, onions and garlic and a bunch of spices. I can get the recipe if you want. It is REALLY good, and cooks a long time she always served it on noodles when I was a kid.

The goulash (aka Johnny Marzetti or slum gullion) that I grew up with was made with ground beef, chunks of tomatoes, green pepper, onions, garlic, and elbow mac. We would sprinkle on some parmesan cheese before eating it.  My hubby is half hungarian and what his mother made and called goulash is totally different.  As was mentioned in a previous post it had chunks of beef and a sauce with lots of paprika and I think they served it with egg noodles.

I think Goulash is sometimes interchangeable with "Hotdish" around here. Ackkk Norwegians.

Hamburger, onions, tomato soup, egg noodles and spices.

Can be also made with mushroom soup and canned or fresh mushrooms.

when i hear the word goulash, I always think "hungarian goulash." i'm not hungarian, and i've never had goulash, i just thought that was the only kind of goulash, lol.
I think I'm going to try this because I'm always looking for REALLY BASIC recipes (i'm the queen of simple cooking) that are good and hearty.

Same just no corn. I love it but hubby doesn't like it that much so I don't fix it often.

For me, GOULASH is any brown-and-toss-it-together-on-the-top-of-the-stove-all-in-one-pot entree. It might be what you describe, Pam, or any number of other similarly put together one-pan dishes I make this way. In other words, the term GOULASH for me is a generic rather than specific and has to do with method of preparation more than rather than a particular recipe.
