I am seriously considering agility training for Vino.  I am positive that he would love it and I am very interested in it myself.  Does anyone have suggestions about how we should prepare before starting training?  He is a very obedient boy, and aims to please.  There is an agility facility not far from my house, so I am thinking about going by to visit to see what it is like.

The most important thing is a good come, and work on getting the dog to focus on you. The way I learned is putting food in both hands and holding both hands out, (kind of like an airplane) the dog will go after one hand then the other, when they look at you kinda saying "Whatta I gotta do to get the treats?" treat and use your praise word, soon when you do that they will just look at you. When I do this with minnie she sits and stares right into my eyes, because that is what I'm asking for. Once they get it use a word, my word is focus and you say the word they look at you and you treat.

And as we lie beneath the stars

Just go to the training center, and talk with the staff. They may have a class where you can work on those things with an agility aspect in mind, and if not, they'll tell you what your dog should be able to do before you start. Different training facilities require different things. I have one warning for you though....agility is SO ADDICTING, and it's a lot of work. More work I think than people realize. I'll be looking forward to hearing about your training if you decide to go forward. You won't regret it I've been training for a little over a year and love it more and more all the time. Agility forms an amazing bond between dog and handler.
Good Luck!!!

I'm no help, Ashley, but it sounds like a lot of fun I'm sure Nora could give you some advice!

They do have a class that incorporates obedience training and intro to agility. It is 6 weeks long and then you move into the beginner agility class. I may have to wait until summer to do it, because I am finishing my last semester of school for my BS-Nursing and I work fulltime, so I am pretty busy during the semester.

Oh, another thing...I am worried about Mocha. I don't think she is agility material because she has a birth defect that affects her left rear leg. She doesn't use that leg all that much and she has some balance issues. I just don't want her to feel left out. Anyone have experience with one dog in agility and another not? Does the one feel left out??? Just wondering, I wouldn't do it for him if it would negatively affect her.

I think as long as you make time for Mocha, she'll be fine. Again, Nora only works with Bailey, so she may be the better person to respond. However, I believe I have seen on TV where they have a special 'round' during the agility for "handicapped" dogs (like 3 legs, blind in one eye, etc.) so maybe that might be an option?

I would love to do something like agility training with Chrissy, but because of the time it takes and the fact there is nothing close to us it is out of the question. We don't even have a pet store or obedience training anywhere close. I would have to drive 1 1/2 hrs to get to the closest class.

All the training she gets will have to come just from me.

If you train one dog in agility... especially if you are a beginner... you are going to have your hands full and I would that you NOT attempt this with two "baby" (beginner) dogs.... because you yourself will be a beginner. Don't bite off more than you can chew, and run the risk of becoming frustrated, as much of the success with agility is for the handler to remain UP. I simply wouldn't do it.

Mocha is relatively new in your environment. Just love her, provide her with a warm, loving home... and give her a lot of attention. She won't feel slighted.

I train two nights a week (one private lesson... one class with other dogs...) and I have 3 other dogs who are not involved in agility. But I spend quality time with them every chance I get, and I don't think they feel slighted. I love ALL my dogs, but some are suited for some activities more so than others.

And yes... agility is VERY hard work. IMO much harder than obedience. Remember... whatever you train on the left must be trained just as successfully on the right... and it's not just about teaching the dog the obstacles.. it's about YOU learning how to communicate these twists and turns to your dog. So BOTH of you will be learning. It's fun... it's addicting... but it's hard work.  It's a big commitment if you plan to train to trial... it's expensive and time-consuming.  Bailey and I enter our first trial in three weeks.... it's a big AKC trial... and after having trained for over a year, I'm still nervous!

Thanks Nora, my goal at this point isn't trial. I just think Vino would really enjoy it and would be very good at it. He is super athletic, so I want to find ways for him to exert himself, plus I think it would be great. I have always enjoyed training him. Even on our walks, walking pace is too slow for him. He does best when we jog, so I think that he would really get a lot out of agility. Hubby is all for it, so I think I might visit the training center in a week or two to see what is up.

Several forum members have done an agility class or two with their dogs just for the fun of it. I know Paul has... LucysColleen has... maybe a few others. Just know it's more work than what you might think... go into it being aware of that, ok?
Good luck to you!

I am actually very up for the challenge...I know I will enjoy it. My husband travels a lot, so I would have plenty of time to focus on it.

Ricky and I have been in agility training since he was 6 months old starting in the beginners class.  We did take a year off due to my work situation and tried flyball (he just didn't see the point in chasing a tennis ball).  We're back in agility training again and my little guy loves it.  He does get a case of the zoomies when we don't practice.  He just goes crazy running and takes any obstacle in his path.  But after he gets that out of his system, he is ready to work.  It's harder for me to learn agility than it is for him.  I highly recommend you look into this.  One of the best performing dogs nationwide right now is a rat terrier.

Here is a link, for anyone doing agility or performing with your rats. This yahoo group is so valuable, and it's only for rats and AHT's! This group helped me through the hard times, and a lot of the top performing agility rats are on here. If you watched the AKC Invitational agility thing last year on TV, Loki the rat terrier is a member of the group. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/actionrats/

I have taken  Fred to some JRTCA fun days and trials, I let him compete in what he likes, which is lure coursing and racing the best. He LOOOOOOVES it, he picked it up on his own prey instinct and it's good exercise. I talked to some of the nice folks who do JRT fun day's and they said Alice is more than welcome to come play and race and lure course or GTG, we just have to bring her. This may be a good option for some if you have dog fun day's in your area that offer terrier events.

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

How do you find good trainers? Is the phone book it? I know Pet Smart offers obedience classes but are they the best resourse?

I've been working with Electron to make her commands a little more automatic so we can do agility too. Is there an age when they should wait to start? The center that is where we live said to wait til they are fully developed so they don't injure themselves. She has so much energy and is so smart that I can't wait to release some of that energy.

I can't wait until Spanky is old enough to start "real" agility training with him,he's just 12 weeks. My husband has made "mini" agility A-frames, cat walks, etc for Spanky & I bought a "mini" tunnel for him, he loves it!  I also think he would love Flyball as he loves to chase his tennis ball. Either way we would have to drive 3 1/2 hours to a class .

When you own a Rattie....you KNOW you are in your right mind

THE MEANING OF RESCUE

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.
Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?
