For those of you who remember, we are still treating Schatzi (the German Shephard) for her perianal fistulas (the little tubes that tunneled from her anus to her skin- she only had one complete tunnel when we started treatment five weeks ago). She has been on a high dosage of her meds for the past several weeks- taking two capsules a day before bed- and her tunnels appears to have healed up. She no longer is crying while pooping and seems to be acting far more like herself. She has gone to the vet every other Friday for follow up testing and blood work to make sure the meds are in her system.
Today we got good news from the vet! Schatzi has improved enough that we can finally decrease the dosage. We will be cutting back to one capsule of her medication a day and a topical ointment. She still has to maintain her prescription diet (which doesn't thrill me since it's not the most nutritious) but I spoke with the doctor about maybe sometime in the future switching her to Natural Balance Duck and Potato or something like that.
It is such a relief for us to learn she is improving and reacting well to her meds. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. It's great to know she's healing (plus the cost of the meds is really high, so it's good for our budget too). Schatzi is turning out to be the most expensive rescue I've ever dealt with, but she is worth every penny!
(And, as a side note, I'm so thnkful for our Banfield Wellness Plan! I would never have been able to afford this without the savings we get there. I think we've saved almost 3K in just over a year!) |
