Hey I'm just trying this site but i have a dachund and rattie mix :  Donnee.  He's adorable and i love him to death; he's just hitting 6 months and learning fast with everything but he doesn't do well with other dogs at all.  He is a neglect case and we adopted him at four months.  Socially with humans he does pretty good.  He still gives the warning bark but stops at that.  However with animals particually dogs goes nuts.... snaping growling all the works... and doesnt' stop for anything.  I've tried distraction, firm correction; the only thing that works is if I leave with him.  If i stay behind he still won't stop, I have to be with him.  I don't know what to do.  Eventually I would like to get another dog but if this keeps up i can't.  if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.  I'm willing to try anything.

Welcome! Sorry to hear about your problems. We have a couple members here who have experience with this and should have some tips. Nora, our training moderator should also give you some advice as soon as she see this. Poor guy went through a lot at the age that he learns his social skills so it will just take some work to teach him to trust again. We would love to see pics!!

Welcome to the site!  Donnee is adorable!  I used to raise dachshies and now haave switched to loving ratties.  A rattie-dachsie mix would be perfect, I think!  They're both gentle breeds and very affectionate.  It's important to socialize him around other dogs now!   Do it daily if you can.  Take him with you places, take him to parks, dog parks if you have them in your area.  Socialization is better before 4 mos. of age, but 6 is not too late.  I would recommend an Obedience Class where he has to get exposed ot all types of dogs.  The other benefits of the class are well worth the cost.  Ask your vet of class info or check your local paper classifieds (that's how I found about about the one Button went to).  Petsmart and Petco offer classes as well, but are kinda expensive.  Mine was 10 weeks (1 class per week) for $40.  But I think that's real cheap compared to what many are.  Shop around.
