after reading the people food, I know the Solid Gold is made with Salmon and I got to wondering is seafood safe for dogs, even shellfish and shrimp??

I was wondering the same thing as Phoenix was fed a piece of shrimp yesterday? He's fine today and actually really loved it

Good question. Zoey has had tuna, salmon and shrimp and has never had any problems. Heck, nothing and I mean nothing, from the Twizzlers, Tick Tacks, marshmallows, pickles, popcorm and everything else a 6 yr old may give a dog... has ever made Zoey sick. Maybe she just a tough ole gal!

I don't think it's bad for them. There was a study done showing that mussels actually helped dogs with arthritis alleviate some of the pain.

Maybe she just a tough ole gal! I think most seafood is ok for them. I've given mine tuna, salmon and shrimp not as regular food but as a treat from my plate. The bad things about the candy is of course the sugar ( a regular supply of sugar can cause pancreatis) and the salty stuff (pickles) can cause heart problems. But these things may not show up for years so just be careful.

Just be sure to COOL salmon if you're in the Pacific Northwest. Raw salmon in the wild there has some sort of very toxic bacteria that is deadly to dogs. If you cook it, it renders the bacteria harmless. Salmon from anywhere else does not have the particular bacteria in question, apparently. I became aware of this fact researching the Raw Diet for dogs.

I became aware of this fact researching the Raw Diet for dogs. I was going to point out the same thing. I NEVER give raw fish to any of mine simply because of the fish risks out here. One of my first dogs, Caleb, was a huge collie and he had gotten into raw Salmon as a puppy. He had fish poison and almost died, but he survived it. Now, thanks to his struggle with the sickness, I am very hesitant to give my dogs any raw fish. Or any fish in general. But I don't mind fish in dog food. I figure they have prepared it to be safe for dogs. If it wasn't, I would have head about it by now. (Or at least that's my thoughts on the matter.)

hmmmmmm, interesting to read this...... I would be a bit uneasy to feed my dogs fish food...... but that's just me........ i know cats and dogs are different, but when my cat had some kind of fish food from her cat food, she developed a UTI. and because of that, i am afraid of that for my dogs..... does that make any sense?

Baby Doll LOVED seafood. If we were having it for dinner, she just about lost it. Shrimp was her favorite treat from our plates!!!

Don't go into debt trying to keep up with people who already are!!

As long as seafood and SALMON are COOKED they are fine to give to dogs. I lost three dogs one year to salmon poisening and I never want that to happen to anybody! I was canning salmon, 200 lbs of it, and burying the heads and other stuff in the orchard. I thought I was safe cause the dogs couldn't get through the fence. Ha. Cleo the boston terrier fit through a hole in the fence, she dug up the raw decomposing salmon. She hauled it back through the hole and shared with her freinds, Lady and Miss Beulah. All of them got salmon poisening, all of them died! I did not find out what was wrong until it was too late. The two old dogs, Lady and Cleo were so sick one day and before I could get to the vets they were dead. I was freaking out by then and thought that somehuman had poisened them on purpose. Then Miss Beulah was sick and I rushed her to the vet to find out what was wrong. I didn't get there soon enough for the vet to save her. While I was gone my kids found the hole in the fence and the dug up salmon place. It was horrible! The only thing I could think of was I should have burnt the fish carcasses instead of burying them like my dad always did.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf,and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

My girls are on a Raw Meaty Bones diet but once a week I give them either canned salmon (with bones), canned tuna or canned mackarel. It's very good for them, providing omega fatty acids for their skin & coats they don't get in other meats. I read that fish doesn't lose as much of its nutritive value in cooking like other meats. And my girls just love it when it's fish day!
