Here is an update on what originally happened. We had a family gathering for Christmas on Sunday at my sister's house. We finally after 6 years had everyone there and were able to take some family pictures. Well after the pictures my niece from out of town was playing with Kasey on the sofa. She was tickling him and tossing him around a little. Well Kasey fell the wrong way and his arm bent completely back wards and lost all feeling and usability of that arm. I rushed him to the closest hospital and they took him into ER asap. Cut his shirt off to find a huge disfigured toddler arm. X-rays confirmed it was a  fractured and dislocated elbow with complications. It cracked his growth plate which was very serious. The tips of the bones also had what they called T fractures. There was also internal bleeding.

The hospital tried several times to sedate Kasey without any luck after sticking him 7 times just trying to find a vein. Finally get an IV going and started pumping Morphine. He never went under completely but cried constantly. We were then informed by the ER doctor that they were not equipped to deal with such an injury and he was going to start calling other hospitals to see who could take him because his injury was serious and needed to be operated on that night.

Well after a few hours we were loaded up in the ambulance and transported about 35 minutes away for another ER examination which confirmed the same as the first. Again, hours later the surgeon arrives and examines yet again and determines that emergency surgery is needed asap. An hour later he is brought in and the surgery went well. After he was out of recovery and placed in a room we were able to be with him after a long 3 hours.

He had a very bad night, crying every hour and then going back to sleep. Every other time he would wake up crying he was vomiting all over the bed and we would have to clean him up. Made a very long night with no sleep.

The next morning went better with him sleeping much of the time after getting something for nausea. By afternoon he is still not eating or drinking and is not allowed to have any more pain meds until we can get something in his stomach. He was looking so bad.

Then the good part is by late afternoon he started eating and drinking. His color comes back and he is more alert and talking. Wanting to play with his toys.

The doctor came to check on him during his last round and Kasey had improved so much that he let him come home tonight. And Kasey has continued to improve after being home.

Kasey has some risks with this injury/surgery which are his arm/elbow growing back crocked, stunted growth, or not fully gaining all of his movement back. At this point only time will tell if the surgery was a success in preventing any of the above risks. All we can do now is pray that he heals normally and not experience any problems in the future.

Here are a few snapshots I took during our stay...

Gosh, I'm glad he's home and feeling better. Looks like he had plenty to play with while in the hospital. Will keep him in my thoughts and pray for his arm to heal like it should.

I imagine your niece feels just terrible about what happened. What did she do to him to cause such an injury? I am glad he got to go home for Christmas. He looks so sweet. I miss my Josh...

I have tears in my eyes looking at those pictures. I know how scary this must be for you not knowing if the healing will be as it should. I'm praying in agreement with others on this board for a quick and complete healing of the fracture with NO residual problems whatsoever when the healing is complete. Kids are tough and bounce back so quickly with this type thing happens. The vomiting things isn't at all uncommon with children and anesthesia. But watch to make sure he starts pooping regularly. If not, he may need a little help to get started, but don't let it go very long. Love ya and prayers will continually go up for you and your family.

Poor little guy. What a traumatic event for you all. Kids are funny, they are flexible as hell but just need to fall the wrong way and this happens. Your niece must be beside herself! Have faith he will heal correctly and be back to his old self real quick...thinking about you.

I logged on this morning to see if there was an update... so glad you posted this, Donna. Even laying in a hospital bed with a broken arm.... he's so cute (although obviously not very thrilled of course). Everyone looks tired. Am assuming that's your older son in one of the pics? What a handsome young man... and nice that he was there. Wow, lady... you have your hands full. Prayers are that he will recuperate and heal back to normal. Kids do bounce back fast, but I pray the healing process serves to allow him to be totally good as new!

Poor little Kasey and you and your hubby too! I hope everyone has told your niece that it was just a freak accident so that she doesn't feel bad. My oldest broke the growth plate in his elbow when he was 18 months old by jumping on the bed and landing wrong. He didn't need surgery and just wore a soft cast for a couple of weeks.

I hope he heals quickly and perfectly, and I hope the rest of your year is uneventful and calm.

Thanks everyone, Kasey had a good night and is having a "wonderful" morning. Looks like just being home has done him so much good. He is using his fingers more and more and does not seem to be in too much pain as long as I keep the pain meds on schedule.

My niece does feel really bad, she cried the rest of the day and all night when it happened. I have talked to her and her mom explaining that this was just a freak accident. It could have happened anywhere or with anyone. He just fell wrong and happened to have a very bad injury.

The ratties are so happy to have us home, Busta is even "playing" this morning!!!!
