is Skipper (move over Mary Beth... your Skipper has competition!). Watch this video closely.... see how Bailey skips (raises his rear end up when he 'trots'?)  Sometimes he skips on one rear leg... sometimes the other rear leg... and sometimes holds both of them up for a split second.  Bailey is obviously not in pain and this doesn't hamper his activity in any way. I've talked about it before on the forum... when he first started doing this, I figured he has the luxating patellas... but after three vet opinions... and two ortho vet opinions....and having everything x-rayed on this dog I can have x-rayed ... all to the tune of almost $1,000.... he does NOT have luxating patellas at all and no one can determine why he does this. I didn't want to continue agility with him if I thought I would harm him in any way... Anyway, I recorded this earlier and wanted to share. IF your dog begins skipping this way, please have him/her checked for knee issues. This is a sign of problems... but it can also be a "terrier thing" (so I'm told). But better to be safe than sorry!  Bailey is what is known as "post-legged" (not enough angulation in the rear legs... see how straight his rear legs are?), so the vets feel this is a habit he has picked up to compensate for that somehow.

My dog skips, Here if you do agility join hte actionrats (it's a group just for rat terrier that do agility!) and read about it. All rats skip, it doesn't harm them at all. Again if their isn't any pain it is just a terrier thing. Minnie does it, and so do almost every rat doing agility right now.

That is strange. Glad that it's nothing that is painful and just a habit.

My toy rat does it too. Don't you just love the one front paw up!!!. Do all rats do this?

Both of my toy ratties do it every no & again. But they run like cheetahs and have no pain when they do the skip/hop thing. Doesn't hamper their mobility or jumping on/off furniture either, LOL. I'm inclined to think it's a terrier thing, too. But I've never had my two evaluated. If they ever yelp in pain, I sure will. I'm well aware of the LP issues in this breed.

Nickle my oldest one skips just like this and his patella's are fine. Both of mine sort of skip when they are going down steps, they only use one back leg and hold the other up, and wiggle their butt back and forth. Both my boys have had their patella's checked and certified for breeding purposes. I am gonna have to compare Nickle to Bailey and see if Nickle is post legged.

Bailey goes down stairs holding one back leg up too. It's the strangest thing. Everyone asks me if he's "lame". But I've had everything checked out that I know to have checked out... by three regular vets and two ortho vets, and he does NOT have LP at all. Now I hear that this skipping is common among the terrier breeds. Odd I've not noticed it before when working with jack russells and manchester terriers...

It is very strange watching them go down steps holding one leg up. They look unbalanced like they are gonna tumble down the steps! Ohh you have worked with Manchesters. I am so jealous. I use to have two Toy Manchesters when I was young, that was our family dogs. When me and my hubby were looking to getting a lap dog I looked and looked and couldn't find any Manchesters.
