Anybody feeding their ratties homemade dog food only?

I am thinking about changing my rattie to a strictly homemade diet but want to know if anyone else is having a good experience with it.  I know of several dog owners who feed their dogs only homemade food and treats.

Any advice or feedback...???

Thanks so much!!

Don't know of anyone on here who does. I do know that you have to be careful to include all the nutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc. that your dog needs in the homemade food.

I know that some dog owners use a gravy-type supplement of vitamins and minerals that they put on top of the homemade food.  But I really wanted to connect with someone who does it so that I can get some feedback, do's and don'ts, etc.

Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it goes...

You have to be VERY careful to provide the essential nutrients in the proper proportion. Please educate yourself if you do decide to do this. (and I applaud you if you do) I don't trust myself to do it right, plus I hate cooking and messing with raw meat doesn't appeal to me at all. I'll spend the big bucks on the best dry dog food I can find, and right now that'll have to do. There are books and other websites where you can probably get more info. Here's one decent site, but I don't know how much info is here for home cooking.

Ok, I looked around online for recipes....a lot of them are mostly cornmeal, wheat, etc. which is what we avoid in bought food.  Also, I haven't found any that I would consider providing the proper nutrition on an ongoing basis, but this recipe looks good for a special treat.  I'd leave out the molasses and use fresh veggies instead of processed AND no ground beef (too fatty), I'd use the chicken:

Dog Food Recipe Ingredients:

  • approx. 5 lbs of ground beef or chicken
  • 3/4 cup canola oil
  • 4-5 cloves garlic
  • 32 cups water
  • 8-10 cups processed veggies (various)
(carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, bean sprouts, potatoes, sweet potatoes, red peppers, spinach, beets, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.) NO ONIONS
  • 2-3 cans kidney beans
  • 1/2 molasses (optional)
  • 42-45 oz oatmeal (quick cooking oats)
  • eggs can be added to boost protein

Dog Food Recipe Directions:

In a large 24qt pot brown ground meat, add canola oil and garlic. When well cooked, add water. Bring to boil, then add veggies that have been processed, (frozen or canned veggies will work too). Use dried kidney beans and soak them the night before preparing a batch of food. While cooking the meat have the beans in another pot cooking them.

Once cooked, they are added to the above mixture. Next, the oatmeal is added. Frequent stirring is necessary at this point as the mixture will stick. Remove from heat, cool and put into containers. you can occasionally add pumpernickel bread and some times substitute brown rice for some of the oatmeal.

I would trust Natural Balance. I prefer the regular Ultra Premium since it has the most protein. I've fed it to my dogs and would again but I'm currently feeding no grain/lo carb foods to take some weight off of Lucky.

I feed part Nutro and part Natural Balance. I was feeding the Duck/Potato but I want to switch to the Ultra Premium. The Duck & Potato is good but the Ultra sounds super good!

I feed blue buffalo. It is all natural, and has no corn, wheat, or soy. The first ingrediant is deboned chicken.

On my flyball team's web page they have a list from the Whole Dog Journal. They put out of list every year of the best and worst dry dog foods. I thought I would include it for anyone who was curious.

I just got the Natural Balance Ultra Premium today and mixed equal parts with Nutro Lamb & Rice. Mine eat both very well....I do think they like the NB Premium better than the Potato/Duck variety.

LOOK under the cooking theme. Sherry Esther did it again and found a cook book by a vet. It looks like it would be really useful with all these dog food recalls going on. You would know for sure that way what is going into your dog! Like us when we raise beef, we feed only organic and pasture that isn't sprayed with herbicides.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

Thanks for the info.  I actually tried the raw food thing and my rattie, Bentley, just sniffed it and left it in her dish.

The next day, I cooked the raw food patties and she gobbled it up quick!!  So now I just went back to making her food:  Cooked chicken and I supplement her food with a vit/min mix.  She loves it!!  She needs to lose weight too, her belly hangs too low...

I have Wendy Volhard''s Natural Diet book...my Vet Kerry Brown's name is also on the cover. You do have to be very careful to make sure you have the right nutrients and vitamin's. It is hard doing this and traveling or going away and depending on someone else to feed your dogs. Ran into a problem when my husband was in the hospital. So switched to Ultra Nuto and still give the cod liver oil, bone meal, kelp...etc.
