A little background first....we've had our 8 week old Jake home for a week now, started crate training him immediately and I think he's doing pretty good...always goes straight to the potty pad when we let him out of the crate and has no accidents in his crate.  Sometimes after being out of his crate for a while he will try and do his business somewhere besides the pad...we watch him close so normally grab him up and place him on the pad....like I said, he's doing good I think...now to my question....

Should we being giving him treats when he does go to the Pad?  Would that help remind him to head there when nature calls?  Thanks in advance...great site!!

Mike

I would treat occasionally, not everytime. You want it to be like a lottery sometimes you win sometimes you don't but you keep trying. If you treat everytime, he will expect somthing every time. If you make it random then he will keep going to the pad in hopes of a treat but it will keep him going to the pad. LOTS of praise everytime, my dogs are both housebroken but even when I am outside with them and they go pottie I still tell them what good dogs they are for doing so. Positive reinforcment never hurts even on what they know!! Best of luck to you

I agree with Alice, my children (grown now) gave Ratty a treat every chance they got and now he wants one for every reason, going out to potty or just standing on the patio. My fiance and I are slowly breaking this bad habit. So like Alice said make it a lottery but use postive reinforcement and praise and love when he does good with a treat only once in a while. I used treats when Ratty was a puppy to teach him to accept people that came to my house, they would give him 1/2 a small milkbone while I gave him the command of friend. He still barks at all electric, gas, etc, meter readers but thats because I didn't tell him they were friends. lol.

Welcome to you and you little fur kid is adorable! Treat the puppy at first along with verbal praise. Gradually make the treats random but always give verbal praise. When you randomize food treats, they don't know exactly when the "magic time" will occur and thy stay more focused for other training, like Sit, and Leave It on walks. If the rewards are random they stay more focused during training sessions or walks. Button is 4 now and just today I said good girl for something on a walk and Button turned her head around to see if this was the "magic time" she was getting a treat.
