If, for whatever reason, you have found that you need to rehome your rat terrier, please consider the following:

Ratbone Rescues (a great rat terrier rescue organization) offers a Guardian Assistant Program (GAP) for owners who want to rehome their dogs. You can see their wonderful site at www.ratbonerescues.com.

If you think GAP might be an option for you, you can send an email directly, with a summary and a picture of the dog, to Sue at suzie_redhead01@ yahoo.com (remove the space after the @ symbol) and she will forward them on to the GAP Coordinator, Susan Beard.

The reason this program exists is this - Ratbones does take in owner surrenders, and those dogs are usually in a safe environment (most of the time - now there are DEFINITE exceptions, like the Momma/Daddy/Puppies from CT). If fosterhomes become filled with owner surrenders, dogs in kill shelters will die because there isn't room in our fosterhomes. If an owner surrenders a dog to our GAP Program, they are put on Ratbone's website for adoption, and the owners take on the role of "Temp Fosters"...

It's not that these dogs don't need Ratbones, they do, but if they are safe for the most part, and if the owners will use the GAP for their dogs, it will give a SOS shelter dog a chance for a fosterhome.

Thanks for posting this Tracey and thank you Ratbones! This is a good option for some owners needing to rehome their ratties.

Sue sent me all of the information and asked that I include it so that everyone is aware that this is an option and helps those dogs that are desperate to be able to be saved.

It is with sadness that I have to rehome my rat terrier he has become aggresive to everyone in the home. I am desperate and worry. Joey is 2 years old and he needs more space and more walks. We live in an apt in NYC on a 5th floor no elevator which makes it difficult for me to take him out everyday, I also have 2 maltese and a grandson of only 5 month.

Joey already try to bite Edin (grandson), and that is part of my main concern. My question to you is do you think he can find a good home is I send him to the ratbones place and how do you know this place is good for rat terrier. Thank you for any advise or help you may have.

You can't imagine how this desicion is breaking my heart but I really have no other choice at the moment.

You do have a choice.  You can bring in a trainer to help with the issues you are having.  Have you tried that yet?

No, we don't know of any place in NYC and most will cost extremely on my too much. I think even if I spend the money on a trainer if we don't do the same things it will never work, my husband spoils Joey extremely and no matter what we say to him he does not listen, for example Joey love to sleep and pee on my bed, you can not imaging how many times I ask my husband not put him there. Also he has biting me and my daughter, believe when I say a trainer will do a lot with him he is very smart but not continuing the training at home will do more damage than good.

If Joey has bitten people, I'm sorry, but we cannot take him into rescue.  Even if we could, would your husband allow you to get rid of him?  Don't you have a PetSmart or a Petco nearby?  They have training there at reasonable prices.

Sounds like Joey has the run of your house, and THAT'S the problem.  He needs discipline and structure.

hdez- you said "We live in an apt in NYC on a 5th floor no elevator which makes it difficult for me to take him out everyday, I also have 2 maltese and a grandson of only 5 month."

I'm curious- how do you walk/exercise your other dogs? Can't you take Joey too when you exercise them? And I agree with Sue, he needs structure and discipline- and quickly! I would not suggest letting your grandson around Joey until you've gotten this under control. Hopefully you and your husband can work together on not only getting him some training, but also in following up with the training and using it at home.

Yes, Joey does run the house. He gets angry when some one is leaving the apt. but not when they come in. If we try to take something from him he will attack and bit. He is ok with the food, we can touch him and even take the plate. Also he pee every where in the apt. My mother has ask me to give him to her. I didn't want to give him to my mother because I was afraid of what he may do to her and I didn't know petco had a trainer. You have giving me an idea I will call petco and make an appointment for Joey and the trainer. He will stay with my mother and start with new rules. He likes my mom and she live in a place where she can take him out everyday, I am sure my husband will be happy with that. But before anything I'll see what the trainer say and hope this work for all of us. thank you for you advise. I'll keep u update on what happen.

We do walk then and excersise them when I can walk them I put them to run in the hallway and go up and down the stairs but Joey will attack anyone and that make it difficult for me. My neighbors love Vhela and Starr but they dont like Joey.
