We inherited both a cat and a rat terrier who is now 2 years old. He was 8 months old when we got him and he has become a smart anaffectionate dog. He grew up with a cat brother who also came to live with us. Now we are thinking of  adding a  kitten to the family but I am worried. Do I dare bring a kitten into the picture? I know he loves to chase squirrels and.hipmunks, given his hunter nature could he/would he kill a kitten? Maybe even by accident?  I'm worried!!!!              THANKS for any advice. j

i dont think he would hurt it, the kitten would probably run and hide. anyway i have 3 grown cats and i have always brought my cats in when they were kittens i dont think you will have a prob. your older cat might take on a mommy role, when i brought my last 2 kitens home my older cat took on a mommy role to the kitttens and even my older cat took on a mommy role to taueny when she was a little tiny puppy!

Trust me, that kitten can stick up for itself...one swat across the nose and your rattie will leave it alone. Also, if you notice your rattie being aggressive with the cat, interrupt the behavior and let him know you will not stand for it. My dog had a bad habit of chasing my cat, and I corrected him and let him know it was unacceptable behavior and he stopped doing it. I will only allow it now if the cat starts it...hehe! I think it will be fine...

We have a RT and a JRT, have a full grown cat and foster a kitten (4 1/2 months now) and neither Sydney or Sonic play to hard with either of them.  In fact the adult cat has been told to settle down.  Sonic our big boy is afraid of the kitten.  You would just have to watch them and correct if there is a problem.  I would not leave them aloneuntil you know how they will behave and still you have a watchful eye.

I want to first of all welcome you to the group, Jayne, in case I haven't done so elsewhere here already. I'll have to let others advise you on kitten/dog compatibility. I haven't owned a cat since I was in college, and that was MANY years ago! LOL

Well, we are having a cat declawed at this very moment due to bloodying my dogs once too often....so...the kitten will probably be fine!

My kitten Ozzy and Prince get along pretty good together. However sometimes Prince will play a little too rough with Ozzy He likes to drag him around by his front leg and pin him down and lick him all over. But hes never hurt him And  whenever  I'am out of the house and can't supervise them, I always put Ozzy in the bathroom where he has his liter box food and water and just shut the door so Prince can't get to him.
