Hey Everyone,

I am looking for a new dog and met the sweetest Rat Terrier the other day! While trying to do a little research on the breed this morning I found your site. Would you mind answering a few questions for me?  I live in Georgia. Anywhere near the Atlanta area and North up to Gilmer County.

1.  Would you get another one?

2. Do they Shed alot and has anyone had experience with the hairless variety?

3.  Where is the best place to get them? I won't do pet stores and would like to know how I can tell if the breeder is reputable.

4. What have you found as the biggest problem you have found with this breed?

Thanks so much!

Hi. Glad you found us - you won't find a better place for information on "ratties" as this site.
To answer your questions:

1. In a heartbeat The only reason I don't yet have 2 (or more) is because my older, larger mixed breed just couldn't handle another rattie, I don't think.

2. To be honest, I think shedding is a problem for some. Personally, I don't find Daisy's to be "too bad", but I'm pretty laid back about it. I have no experience with the hairless rat terrier.

3. We actually have some very reputable breeders as members here, and they may respond. Personally, I encourage rescuing/adopting as there are some very, very loving and/or already trained ratties in most every area of the country - too, too many of these poor dogs in shelters, many in kill shelters or "pounds", so that is always my first recommendation and certainly the one I plan to use when the time comes for me to get another.

4. Biggest problem? Hmmm...in all honesty, I myself have not had what I would consider a "big" problem with Daisy. She, like most all ratties, is extremely intelligent and easy-to-train, and while she is active, she is not hyper, and with a fair bit of exercise/play is more than willing to just "hang out" and cuddle.

I'm sure you will get tons of responses, so please check your post often

First of all a Big Welcome. Glad you found us. You'll find so much information here.
Yes, if anything happened to our little Ernie, I would get another in a heartbeat.
Shedding is a factor but not as much as you would think. I have had other breeds that were much worse. Being a short haired breed, it really isn't a major factor.
Biggest problem??? Maybe laughing too hard at there antics. They are strong willed but so intelligent and easy to train. I can't think of a major problem.
Breeder questions can be answered maybe better by others. Like Tracey said rescue is a good solution also.

Welcome!
1. Of course I'd get another rattie! I just ran out of room with 4 dogs. 2 are ratties, 1 is a whippet and 1 is a chi-terrier mix.
2. Mine do shed...doesn't bother me but I do have white hairs on my clothes, car seats, even my office chair at work!
3. Rescuing is a good idea however if you want a puppy here is what I did to find a breeder: research them online, ask around (locally or on forums such as this one) to see what their reputation is, contact them and take a few weeks talking to them before committing, visit them if you can. A good breeder should ask YOU questions about yourself to see if you will be a good home for their puppy - and a good fit for a rat terrier - that shows they really care about the breed and the dogs and aren't just in it for money.
4. I can't think of a problem with ratties....they aren't for everyone though - if you want a dog that will just lay there all day and not interact with you - then ratties aren't for you. If you want the most loving, intelligent, interactive little dog ever - then ratties are for you!

Good luck!

I woudl get another Rattie in a second.  Just me personally, I will always go through Rescue. I have found these to be the sweetest, most loving dogs and it just feels good.

Biggest problem, make sure you have a yard or somewhere they can run and play. Let them get ALL their energy out, but then when they come inside what wonderful little lap dogs.

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

Welcome! You have stumbled on to a wonderful breed!

I have 2 ratties now, and Yes! if I could fit more into my life right now I most certainly would.
My boys barely shed except for in the beginning of summer. Otherwise I rarely notice any hair around, but some shed more than others.
As Tracey said, we have many breeders here who may be able to help you in locating a pup, and there are always many rescues looking for a wonderful home.
And as far as problems......well, I just can't get enough of them! lol The are loving, sweet, easily trained, great with children of all ages and very adaptable. They can go from play dog to lap dog in minutes! I could write a book on the reasons I love these dogs!!

Good luck on your search, keep us posted if you decide on a rattie.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. Welcome to the forum and if you decide on a rattie, I hope you stay to post... actualy you could stay even if you didn't...

1. Would you get another one?
Yes, definately! When my finace and i were looking and I found a rattie, I fell instantly in love, although Adam was kind of hesitant. Now, he and Nibbler are always together. We are currently looking for another one before the end of the year, and I can't wait till we have a bigger home so that we can get more. These are little babies with great dane personalities. Love em.

2. Do they Shed alot and has anyone had experience with the hairless variety?
I won't say that my dog doesn't shed, but he doesn't shed very much. I haven't had any experience with the hairless, but from what I understand they are exactly the same, just require sunblock and sweaters more often

3. Where is the best place to get them? I won't do pet stores and would like to know how I can tell if the breeder is reputable.
We got ours from a man who I don't think was a breeder but did have two registered ratties who had puppies, so they were able to be registered easily as well. Petfinder.com has some great ones and I think that's where we'll get out next one.

4. What have you found as the biggest problem you have found with this breed?
In all honesty, there isn't. They are not prone to sickness as some breeds are, but they can get sick. They do get cold easily so they will need sweaters and jackets... but who doesn't like dressing up a doggie

I want to add that this breed is definitely a people dog. They aren't the type of dog that lays on the rug while you go about your business around the house. They like to be by the one's they love. While I'm on-line here, Ernie is sleeping on the ottoman right behind me. When I go to take a shower, he will follow me and lay on the bed until I'm done. Always a few feet away from mom. If I sit on the couch, it's snuggle time. They are just absolute loves.

Welcome Rybekka!  No better place to learn about ratties than from rattie owners.  I thought I was a dachshund person for 30+ years.  But once I got a rattie, boy did I discover my breed!  Happy, affectionate, playful dogs all their lives!  I swore I'd never have multiple dogs again, but they say ratties are like Lay's potato chips, ya cah't have just one!  Well after two years, I succumbed and rescued a pup and two is definitely good for these little dogs.

They entertain each other.  They play and snuggle together.  With one, you have to be willing to be their playmate & give the pup more of YOUR time.  Terriers will demand their attention.  But what playful, loving attention!  I'm loving every bit of it!   Will probably never own any other breed!  They steal your heats for sure!  What little loves!

Only facts you need to be aware of with this breed, I think, is besides being shedders in many cases, this breed is cited in breed literature as being prone to Luxating Patella in their rear legs (slipping kneecap) that is degenerative over time and usually will require surgery in later life.  But it is correctable.  But if you do the research,  pretty near every breed has some genetic weaknesses, and many breeds have several!  So one "ain's so bad" IMHO   The breed is also cited as being prone to skin problems (allergies).  On the right food, my two girls have none of these problems (yet).

Yes I would get another one.  In fact I just did.  I have Mikey who is 5 yrs. old. (pictured) and then there's little Alice who is 5 mos. old.  Like everyone else says, they do shed some but since they have short hair it's not so bad.  They are very smart and easy to train.  I've had rat terriers since 1992 and have gotten the last two from a very reputable breeder.  Your life will absolutely be changed for the better if you add a rat to your household!

Well, as an owner of two ratties... oh YES! I'd get another, and another, and another if I could. But hubby says for two 2 is enough. But mine are both still very playful and active. My oldest one just turned a year and my little one is just about to turn 8 months. I don't seem to have a problem with shedding. Apollo ( my oldest ) shedded mildly at the begining of summer but nothing that was overwhelming or anything. I got both mine from breeders but rescuing is always a GREAT way to find a rattie. Problems? None here! These are the BEST doggies. They are so smart, loyal, loving, attentive... I could go on and on. I wouldn't trade my ratties for any other breed.

Hi Rybekka,

1. If I could. I have 5 personal dogs and 1 fosterdog. My county only allows 5 dogs before you have to get a kennel license. I sneak Mickey MooMoo by as "not mine" because he's a foster dog!! Here's his link: http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9170110

Someday I'm going to sell my house and buy one out in the country so I can have 20 of them!! I adore these dogs!

2. Yes, they shed, but using a "zoom groom" helps with that a lot.

3. Best place to get them is through rescue, but I'm partial to that www.ratbonerescues.com  - I foster for them and we have dogs all throughout the US. Our dogs are socialized in homes and any issues that they may have are worked on through our dedicated fosterparents.  Or searching petfinder.com for Ratties in shelters.

4. No problem with this breed at all, unless dedication to their person and unconditional love is a bad thing!!

Rybekka,

1. I always new I wanted one, but it took a lot to convince my boyfriend... When we went to pick one out of the litter, he fell so in love with them with in half an hour that he was trying to "talk me in to" getting two. It hardly took much arm twisting. And this is a guy who had to be begged just for one! And he's definitely happy with the decision, we can't imagine our lives with out them now! And to my personal experience, everyone that I know who has a Rattie ends up with another eventually, they're irresistible. And amazing!

2. Bella sheds a lot, and it's more noticeable because she has so much white hair. Then again, her brother Henry hardly sheds at all. I don't know if this seems strange but I've notice that on both of mine the white hair tends to be longer and comes out much more easily than the black hair... that's probably just something that's particular to my two, it seems a little to odd to be particular to the breed, that one color sheds worse! Either way though, it hasn't become a huge issue either way.

3. I don't know much about RT breeders... I got mine from family.

4. No big problems, these are the best dogs ever! One of my best friends in college had one that she let me babysit for... no problems there. Since then my dad re-married and pretty much all of my step-mother's children have rat terriers... theirs are also wonderful dogs, no problems. One of those families has young children, they get along great with the dog. The others have a farm with all sorts of other animals, and the dogs get on famously. And the people that we got ours from have 4 more at home... my step sister and i joke about bringing ours over there (she has another one from the same litter, plus a chihauha) to do the 32 leg shuffle! They have amazing personalities and get along extremely well with others if properly socialized. And they'll do anything to make you laugh, the little goofballs!

Welcome!!  And so excited you're considering a rattie!  To answer your questions...

1.  I would TOTALLY get another rattie.  But we've already got three dogs, and two of them are twice the size of our rattie.  Plus we rent and it's a small one bedroom house.  We just don't have room!  (And, technically, in our town, we're not supposed to have more than 2 dogs...we figure Sam doesn't count since she's old!)

2.  I don't notice too much shedding.  Yes, I have some little white hairs- mostly in my car and sometimes on my black pants.  But, then again, we have a shephard mix and a lab mix.  Both of them shed far more and longer hair.  Rowdy's is nothing in comparison.  I've got no experience with the hairless...

3.  All my dogs are shelter dogs.  I prefer to rescue my dogs.

4.  I can't think of a serious problem.  I can't keep Rowdy out of the trash, but that's just his weakness....  Other than that, he's eager to please, loving and cuddly, and has huge personality.  We got him to be a companion to the shephard and, even though he's less than half her size, he's the perfect companion.  Playful and never afraid to take her on, he also enjoys cuddling with me and is nearly always by my side (when he's not busy wrestling with Schatzi).

Hi and Welcome!
1) I have 2 ratties already, but if I had only gotten one, I'd be looking for another by now...they really need a rattie friend.
2) Shedding - yes and no. I have always had dogs, so shedding is not a big deal to me, but it may be if you're not used to it. Honestly, my mom's lab shed more than all my dogs combined.
3) I got mine from a breeder, but I think I would go through a rescue program for another rattie...so many great dogs need homes
4) My girls get into more mischief than any other dogs I've ever had, but they make up for it in unconditional love. They have a big dog personality packed into a small dog. They can wear my dobie out, which I always thought was impossible.

I would get several more in a heart beat! But I live in an apartment and I am already 1 animal over my limit!

Jack gets along well with my 2 kitties (except for when they decide to beat up on them, but he does no more than defend himself & then run to me for protection)

He is a rescue dog, but I would also consider going through a local breeder if I wanted a puppy,

He is mostly white and seems to shed quite a bit, but no more than either of the cats...

I have had many dogs in my life, but now that I have lived with a rattie I can not imagine ever having anyother breed again! He is the most even tempered dog I have ever known, and loving to a fault (all he wants to do is be with me and love me)

Hi, I would definately get another and plan to in the future. He sheds a little, but that doesn't bother us, and we have found nothing in the negative about this breed. He's great with kids, and other pets. Like some of the other responses, I would recommend a rescue, there are so many out there with no homes etc. it is really sad. If it is ok to say so, I highly recommend Ratbone Rescues, where we adopted our Rattie They have many ratties waiting for their forever home.

I have always had large dogs (50 plus lbs.) Would never even consider a small one. One of those "real dog" issues I guess. Anyway, just after we lost one of our "big dogs" to cancer - Smokey came into our lives purely by chance (or was it???)

This little guy is the biggest dog we have ever had - all 17 pounds of him. He gives us 24 hours of love, affection and fun 7 days a week. We still adore our Bandit (75 lb. hound mix) and love him to death. He and Smokey are the best of buddies but, for us - it will be Ratties in the future.

We're hooked -

1.  I have a Rat and A Jack Russel.

2.  They do shed but it is not a problem for us, we also have two cats that shed.  Some people have problems with shedding.  I think it is a person thing.

3.  I would go through a breeder if you want a puppy, ask lotsof questions and get refereences from them if you want an older pup why not think about rescuing one

4.  The biggest problem for me is they are addictive-- you seem to want more when you get one.  Alsothey are very smart and you have to continue to stay ahead of them

Hi. Welcome to the BEST rat terrier page on the WEb ( Literally) !!!

1. If I could get another Rattie, I DEFINITLY would!!!

2. Daisy sheds, but not much. You can keep shedding to a minimal, by just brushing them every other day ( Just a min. or two) and bathing once a month ( Unless they get messy)

3. I got Daisy from a breeder, but if you can't find a rattie you like at a shelter, then the breeder ( You find in just a local paper)

4. I really haven't found a problem with my Rattie...... But they are pretty active dogs.

If you like an active dog, then a rattie is for you!!! Welcome!

I would get another one. But right now I want to wait till Prince is a little older. Hes only 7 months right now. Maybe in about a year. Plus right now I'm thinking of getting a new kitten and I want him to get use to the kitten first.

Prince sheds. But not really that bad.

I would go to  good breeder.

I haven't had a bit of trouble with Prince. Hes really a sweet little dog.
