Jager loves to sit at the window and bark at the squirrels.  She could do it all day long.  They actually deserve it.  I think they taunt her a little bit, sitting on my front steps eating their nuts staring at her while she tries to get through the window.  When i let her outside she bolts out after them.  One of these days, I am going to get a furry little present!!  I also love it when we are playing in the yard and she sees one.  She gets into hunting mode and her tail goes stiff, and her front paw is lifted up and she creeps up to them, just staring and waiting.   Then she runs after them and tries to climb the tree!!   She actually did catch a possum the other night, but when it played dead she was so confused.  She was barking and whining at it.  She just wanted to play!!  The second she turned her head that possum sat up and ran for his life.  Betcha he will stay out of my yard!!

Bailey is exactly the same way. She loves to chase squirrels, hasn't caught one yet but she's tried so hard. When I first got her, she was take off after them barking her head off, then I guess she saw that that wouldn't work, so now she sneaks up on them without barking. Sometimes it looks like she could climb a tree. She's found a couple possums too, I hope they don't come back.

This was exactly what happened when Button encountered a baby possum late one night in our yard.  Even I thought it was dead from her first "bite".  But it just scurried off when we walked away to get something to pick it up with.  Fortunately, when the girls watch squirrels through the window, they just quiver quietly.  They don't make their noise until they bolt out the door!  Then the screeching & barking begins.

Phoenix is the same.....He sits in our window and barks. He also makes this other little whinning sound that is so cute. I'm glad he tries to scare them off, they can be such an nuisance at times!

Our late dog, Clyde, was a bichon and never much of a hunter in his later years. He did chase off a herd of deer in our old house when he was about three years old (I think that the stag saw this little white noisy thing and figured it wasn't worth the effort to charge him), but in our new house we're fairly sure that the rabbits were chasing him. The waskly wabbits kept getting bolder and bolder. They were actually nesting near the house foundations.

Then Clyde died (we still grieve a year or so later).

A coule of months later we get Hendryx. He has about an acre of yard to run around, but the smell of small game seems to turn him on.

The rabbits are all gone; they nest in our neigbor's yard where Hendryx sees them and whines to get at them, but they don't come around any more.

The birds with ground nests moved out after Hendryx scored a couple of chicks.

He scored a young chipmunk and proudly showed it off to us.

We've gotten religious about keeping his shots current.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

Lloyd is on SUPER squirrel patrol most days..he cries at the sliding glass door until I open it.Sometimes there are several & he cannot decide which ones to go after. One day we had the combination:squirrel, rabbit & chipmunk--he was all over the place. They get in the trees above him & taunt him--they drop acorns & branches on him.I PRAY he never catches any animals.I do have to say the giant FROG LEAP off the back deck is the funniest thing EVER & I could watch him do that all day!!

Ty has to watch through the windows for squirrels & birds constantly! If the window is down he pokes his head between the blinds!! My Dad shoots the crazy squirrels that keep eating the bird seed and Ty goes out there with him and gets to carry it to the woods!! He caught his first squirrel awhile back! (His head is still huge!) But he found a baby bird one day and he would chase it, and then the bird would stop and he just stare at it then follow it when it just running again. He never touched it which is weird bc he always chase the birds around trying to get one!!

OMG! Your Ty photo in the Superman costume looks like my Eddie in my profile photo!

We cna't even say squirrel in our house without the ratties bolting thru the dog door - we now refers to them as "S".  There's an "S" on the fence, the "S" is hanging down on a palm frond, etc...........

We have to refer to them now as M.S. (for Mister Squirrel). If we say "your buddy is outside", they've already learned that "Buddy" refers to squirrels and react by bolting over to the kitchen door!

Pepper watches everything out the window, but she's only chased a squirrel once. I think she got mad cuz it's actually faster than her.

I've got a black walnut tree that hangs over my wood fence from the neighbor behind me, and it attracts all sorts of squirrels and critters to my yard. And I have a tree close to my back porch that if you look up, you can actually see in the Y of 2 branches, a squirrel's nest. I have 5 Ratties who go BEZERK when they see or hear squirrels!! I'll have to catch it on video and show ya all. Then there are the brave squirrels who try to run down the top of my fence with 5 maniac Ratties running behind it!! LOL It's quite a site and a major ruckus...LOL

The man I got Sassy from uses his dogs for squirrel hunting....
all you have to do is say that word and Sassy is in hunting mode....
I have a pic of Sassy in a 6 ft vertical jump at my apple tree trying to get a squirrel...

I witnessed Lucky killing a squirrel today.  Ugh!  He looked like he was possessed when he caught it and gave it the death shake. A half hour later he just missed another one.  The squirrel dove under a pile of leaves along the fence and managed to escape. Oscar just likes to run after Lucky barking his fool head off.  I guess it's just nature thinning the herd, leaving the strongest to survive.

Now that we're conditioning Hendryx to driving (short drives followed by a walk followed by another short drive in a different direction), Hendryx has started to become the fearless dashboard hunter. He puts his paws on the dashboard and looks out the windshield waiting for something to move in the headlights. If he sees anything, he starts to bark and whine and beg for me to stop so that he can go out to hunt it down. Of course I don't stop, but he's ready, willing, and wanting to hunt.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

We don't have any squirrels in our yard so I neevr even thought about it. We went camping and we got there at night so Tucker didn't notice anything. The next morning... at 5:30 AM...Tucker and I go for a walk after breakfast.... There were pecan trees EVERYWHERE.... And of course SQUIRRELS!!!!! He freaked out!!! He almost choked himself trying to get at them!

I read somewhere on the net last year they turned 5-6 ratties (can't remember the exact number, but it wasn't very many) loose in an infested barn and between them they killed around 2000 in an incredibly short period of time (half an hour if I remember the details correctly).

Funny stories! I no longer have squirrels in my yard. I have CATS! So the first time Savanna saw them in the park, she wanted them BADLY!!!! Good thing she was on her leash, or she'd still be there chasing them!

Lacy loves to chase squirrels, and we have a ton of them around here. But these squirrels have a wicked sense of humor...not only do they taunt her, they've actually started dropping acorns on her head! This has been a mast year for the pesky nuts, and with 10 live oak trees in the yard, it's everyone watching out above for flying NUTS!

Bobbi,

I think that we must have the same type of "evil" squirrels! They will drop the acorns from the large oak tree as we sit on the patio and have even dropped pecans (they have carried from another tree on the other end of the yard) from the oak tree! It drives the dogs(and me) nuts. Pun intended! LOL

Buddy and Dixie seem to know when they are near the house and would go through a door or window if they could for a good chase.
