| What size is she and what size was the male? How far along is she? Have you had her to the vet. |

Roxie weighs about 13 lbs and is a short legged. I am trying to post a picture now. The Shit zsu is a little bigger maybe 20 lbs. |

| When did they mate? Are you positive she is pregnant and have you had her to the vet yet? |

Roxie sounds cute! I would get her to a vet (if you haven't already) and see if he can tell how big the puppies are and how many of them there are. If the puppies are too big she may have to get a c-section. You'll need to keep an eye on her when it comes near her time to deliver and if there is any sign of trouble get her to an emergency vet (or preferrably YOUR vet if you can!). But hopefully that won't be necessary and she'll have them just fine! |

| Roxie is due to have these pups any day now? And she has not been seen by the vet? IMO - it is vitally urgent that you get her in to the vet immediately so that he can examine her (maybe do an x-ray) so he can determine the approximate size and number of pups she is going to have. You will need to have a plan in place should she have difficulties giving birth. I imagine if she is only pregnant with one or two pups and they are large, a preventative c-section might be in order, but you really need to take her to see the vet so these things can be determined. |

| I talked to the vet and he said there is no reason to see her unless she has trouble. Perhaps I need to change vets? |

| I would say "yes" to consulting with another vet. I can't imagine any vet saying that he doesn't need to see any patient of his who is pregnant and especially one who is pregnant by a larger male dog - even though 5 - 7 lbs. may not seem like much. And what exactly are your choices if she has "trouble" at 3 a.m.? Is he on call? |

Yes - get a second opinion! Everyone on this board who has had puppies has taken the mother in to the vet before they were born - at least all the ones I've known about. Even if the father is smaller than the mother. You need to be feeding the mother a good quality food right now, too. Is she up to date on shots, etc? |

| She is up to date on everything and the vet seems to love her. It's ust that he knows I am disabled and live on limited income. He is just two miles away. I can feel 4 puppies in he belly very precisely she is huge and they protrude like pictures. I just recently had a round with fleas by a visitor stray and she is allergic to the bites so I had her to the vet for that and the skin so soft and Frontline are working for now but I still see them once in awhile on the carpet. Any hints? I want to rid them before the babies come. Also can u help me get her picture to upload? |

Here's a link that covers care of the pregnant female including flea control. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_care_of_the_pregnant_dog.html it also links to another page of information on care of the newborns. Really important right now though that you know the signs of labor and are prepared to take her in for emergency care if necessary.
From the website:
JUST PRIOR TO ISOLATION, IT IS A GOOD IDEA
FOR THE EXPECTANT MOTHER TO HAVE
A RADIOGRAPH OF HER BELLY TO COUNT PUPPIES.
KNOWING HOW MANY PUPPIES TO EXPECT
WILL TELL YOU WHEN SHE IS FINISHED DELIVERING.
LABOR AND COMPLICATIONS OF DELIVERY
There is always the possibility of a problem with delivery and you will need to be able to recognize labor when it is occurring, what is normal and what is a sign you need to see the vet for assistance. Please visit Giving Birth to Puppies for information on care during labor and nursing.

| Yes! Let a vet look at her. They can x-ray and check puppy size if necessary. Should this ever happen again -- get her to the vet asap and they can give her a shot to stop the pregnancy (or at least I know they used to do that - I'm guessing they still do) |

| Some vets do some don't. The shot does not always work. Was it your rattie's first heat? Hopefully with a larger litter the pups are smaller, but there is always the chance of a big pup getting stuck half-way through the labor and you really need your vet available when you need him/her! Especially with a first litter, usually at 3 am. The smaller ratties are the ones that are most likely to have problems more so if she is under 10 lbs, but 13 is pretty close. You will want to watch her closely. from 60 to 65 days anytime there. Some are early some are late, just like people. |

I am sorry to be a wet blanket... but why was this girl even left intact if you did not wish to breed?
The ONLY way to guarantee a female is not bred is to spaye her. As you learned, locked doors do nothing.
You state you are on a fixed income and we know about that but it must be pointed out that an emergency C-Section and puppy care, shots, boarding etc is much more expensive even is she and the puppies have zero problems.
I hope she has them easily but 7 pounds is dicey with her but like someone said, at least she is not a tiny girl.
Good Luck Susie, I hope it works out for you and you baby.
