We need help!!! What is the proper amount to feed the dogs? We feed them Nutro Ultra and we don't have the bag. The food is in a container.

We have 3 Rats, two are perfect size and weight. Gizmo is shorter and stockier and is getting bigger, no matter how many walks and how much fetch we play. She does like to eat and over eat.. Our problem is we have always let them eat freely, which is usually in the evening. But Gizmo is packing a few extra pounds and we would like to fix it before it gets worse.

Gizmo is almost 8 and weighs about 18-20 pds, Bailey almost 7 and weighs 22 pds, and Squirt is 5 and weighs 17 pds.

How much should we feed them a day, and how many times? Also what is the best way to go from free eating to a routine? Just give a set time limit and take up the food? Should we stick with the Nutro Ultra or go to a weight management plan? The other 2 don't need a diet. LOL

I appreciate all your help and advice.  Alli

I used to free feed until I got Skipper back in March. He tends to gain weight just by looking at food LOL. He was pitifully thin when he came home from the shelter but after a couple of weeks on Nutro he was filling out nicely. Then I got Natural Balance Duck and Potato - he became a porker. So I started feeding only a set amount and putting it out once a day in the evening. (Mine are all short-legged ratties and Skipper is a chi-rattie or JRT mix). I didn't do anything particular when I started this - just did it.

It works pretty well. I also walk him a lot. Now, Mitzy will get breakfast because she doesn't eat enough in the evening...I just have to make sure I keep Skipper with me while she's eating.

Sounds like Skipper and Gizmo just gain from being near food. lol. I think Gizmo is a short legged Rattie too.

We also noticed she would follow us with her ball when we came home which was normal to play. But now.... once we started playing she would eat, we would be busy playing with the other ones and lose track that Gizmo was eating so much. She did this to me twice today, would play for a second but really wanted to eat!

I'm not exactly sure how much is the "correct" amount to feed my dogs.  I feed mine once a day in the evening and if they don't eat it all by the time I'm done eating my dinner, I pick up the dishes.  I've got a 27 lbs type A rattie and he eats somewhere between a cup and a cup and a half.  I think if I left more out, he would eat more, but he just eats to keep my other dogs from eating it.  I feed mine Canidae All Life Stages, so it works great for all my dogs.  I switched to it after reading all the info on here about the different foods, and my dogs love it.

Most food bags have a chart on how much to feed but really, it varies with each dog so I just feed the amount that keeps them looking good but not fat.

Diet food - I've used Natural Balance Premium Weight Control but really there wasn't much difference. You can feed less (of a really good quality food) and then add some green beans (unsalted) to fill her up.

Skipper will do the same thing as Gizmo - I'll be doing something with them and Mr. Piggy will be in the food trough. I have to just keep him away after he eats his dinner.

Ditto MB - I use the weight control for my Lab just because she battles her weight and she can eat a little more of it -- I use the allergy formula or the adult formula for Katie. I start with the recommended feeding per age/weight (and quality dog foods usually are pretty good about their charts) and adjust as the dog seems to call for. You gotta start somewhere, so the chart is where I start.

Smokey is 21 lbs. I feed him around PM a cup of dry Natural Balance duck/pot and put in about a half inch off the top of the canned food of the same. The balance of the can goes in Bandit's food (he is a hound mix 75lbs). As soon as Smokey is finished eating (about 30 seconds!! LOL) he goes right outside and poops. I honestly don't know how much he would eat at one feeding if I filled his bowl. He was 15 lbs when we got him and looked a bit thin. My vet said 20 lbs would be ideal weight for him. Oh - he's 2 years old.
