Angel is almost 10 months old and I swear she is balding. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? I will take and post pictures later tonight, so everyone can see what I'm talking about.
Thanks |

| Where is she balding? Pics would help but 2 things come to mind. One could be demodex mange which starts usually on the head, eyes and ears. Also, some blues also get a form of color dilution Alopecia but I am not sure what age it can start. Has she been to the vet since it started? |

| she is balding at the top of her head, slightly around her eyes and in her neck region. she was very thin on top of her head as a puppy but now its pretty bad. we have not had her to the vet. is demodex mange a serious condition or one of those things you just gotta deal with? |

| Some can outgrow it with age as their immune system matures, but in general you would want to get it treated before it gets too bad. I would talk to your vet. They would just get a quick scraping of the area and look at it under a scope. If it is they can treat it. Is she up to date with vaccinations? |

You might try a borax solution rinse to see if that helps. It's a cheaper alternative than the vet and you can always see the vet if it doesn't work. I think I'll try it on Oscar since he's got the same symptoms. He had bumps that scabbed over but now just has thinning fur around his head. I also found a small scabby, rash-like area on his underarm the other day but it seemed to heal itself. Oscar is somewhat neurotic and is high strung so I think he has stress related flare-ups. As Sarah said, some outgrow it but some are born without the natural immunities to fight the mites. I think I read someone used a treatment that Paul recommended. The treatment I'm going to try is 2 parts water , 1 part hydrogen peroxide (3%), with powdered borax stirred in until it no longer dissolves. Rinse the dog with this solution and let the dog air dry. The peroxide penetrates the skin and the borax kills the mites. The dogs bedding should also be washed with borax.

Well, not balding, but loosing hair in the head and tummy. Mooch went through this as he got older, few years ago and I finally realized it was probably diet related since his lamb ad rice food was probalby low on fatty acids. So after talking with my vet he now gets a vitamin and a fatty acid pill a day and we are working on adding a more natural food to his diet. With the vitamins and fa pills her grew back his missing hair! But changing his dies after 12 years proved to be problematic, so we may give up on that. His tummy coudl not handle a change in protein, so we may add soem natural canned food with the same protein (now chicken) that he is used to in his senior dog food to get him some more nutrients. You'll also notice dog hair all over you after the vet visits or a high stress stituation? I think I read somewhere their hair will fall out during hig stress? I'm not sure where I read this. Depends on how bald you're talking.

| My puppy is apparently allergic to grass. He rubs and runs in the grass, and wherever he does that, he seems to get red and sometimes the hair falls out as well. Maybe it is something similar? |

I am new to this site. I have a 3 year old blue rat named Ricky. He too has the hair thinning on the top of his head, at the shoulders and how further down his back. I thought it was from going in and out of his doggy door but we have limited that with almost no change. I wonder if this is the color dilution I have been reading about. Anybody else having this ? He doesn't scratch or act as if it bothers him.

I'm thinking it just might be the breed. I talked to my breeder and she said that one of the parents has thick hair and the other one is thinning as well. I haven't talked to my vet about it, but I'm thinking it might be just one of those things. Sorry i haven't gotten any pics yet, i'll get them up ASAP. Thanks |
