Jack seriously is losing his hair.  It is everywhere, he looks very dull and frizzy and he is balding.  He has a bare spot under his neck, his belly is almost bald and his legs are thinning too.  He is losing hair from all over though, these are just the spots that have lost the most  I am in the process of switching them back to NB Duck and Potato, but I am scared that isn't the problem.  He is hesitating when he goes up the stairs, he lost yet another nail, and he plays but seems more tired. He blinks/winks and squints alot now too. WTH? I need to talk to my vet this week to see where we can go next.  I am really nervous now that this is systemic lupus.    I can't deal with that, I really can't..............

Sarah, I'm so sorry that Jack isn't doing/feeling well. Poor guy. I hope your vet is able to offer some assurances. Are there any specialitists or veterinary schools of medicine anywhere near you that might be more knowledgeable?

Yeah, Cornell is about an hour away, but my Vet went there and has actually consulted with a former classmate who specializes in Dermatology there. Most of Jacks treatment plans were through him! So with the time and traveling at this point then I think we are going ot stick where we are. Next step is trying to fund a biopsy of his nose (which I can't afford now) and then probably steroids for life. But the scary part is that usually, from what I have read, either the treatment or the disease causes problems fairly quickly. The + is he has young age on his side.

Oh gosh, poor little Jack! I don't know what's in Wellness Core but Mayfly was loosing some hair, getting hives, etc. and I switched her back to NB Duck/Potato and her skin is clearing up. Jack sounds like he may have something more than skin issues though....is there another vet besides the Dermatology specialist that your vet can consult with?

Poor Jack. Yes, would talk to your vet. Could be something systemic going on. Please let us know what the vet thinks. Will keep our little buddy Jack in our prayers. In fact, will go right now and get Katie and Dixie and we'll all say a prayer for him.

Thanks guys. I am going to speak with her as soon as I get a moment. I was looking into Wellness Core though and found a thread on a pitbull forum stating by many people they had many different skin issues with their dogs and this food that cleared up as soon as they changed foods. I am hoping this is all it is. My poor baby is such a mess and only 1.

Sarah, just curious, what did the people whose dogs had problems with this food think was causing the skin issues? I mean which ingredient?

From what I read they weren't sure.  Something about around 6 months ago ownership/formula changed hands and it hasn't been quite the same since.   Really, the ingredients appear great.  Maybe it is the source, I don't know.  I was hoping Ski could chime in as he feeds it at times and always liked it.

Wow, I sure hope Jack gets better soon. I'll send a prayer up for him. Yeah, I noticed that when I switched Shadow to Wellness a few months ago. I didn't like his coat which had become dull... so I put him back on Canidae and he has a beautiful coat and is doing well. I threw the what was left of the bag of Wellness out.
Keep up updated on your Jack... I know this must be hard for you and him. Take care

Just checked out the thread from the pitbull forum.  I had almost bought some of this Wellness Core so I'm glad I didn't!  I don't know if it's the sunflower oil (like one poster thought) but there are several ingredients in there that some dogs could be allergic too....and since Mayfly is so allergy prone I'm not going to risk it.  She's doing good on NB Duck/Potato so I'm leaving her on that.

I really hope it IS the food that's affecting Jack because that's an easy thing to fix.

It just threw me as how this food is claimed to be one of the tops, but then you find that there are a lot of dogs with issues with it. I' not sure when the formula changed though. I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it. They were fine on NB. Duh. We'll see.

Well, it's mostly meat which is good. No grains. I wonder though if dogs can allergies to anything just like people?  (I'm prone to allergies and have a long list of things I can't eat).  If dogs can be like that then some of the extra ingredients that, while fine to feed most dogs, may cause allergies in some......Don't know, just guessing.  Mayfly had horrible hives when I fed her Newman's Own dog food....it may have been one of the many grains in it.

Here's the Wellness Core ingredients:

Product Ingredients | [script removed]

Deboned Turkey, Deboned Chicken, Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, Potatoes, Dried Ground Potato, Tomato Pomace, Natural Chicken Flavor, Canola Oil, Chicken Liver, Salmon Oil, Flaxseed, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Kale, Broccoli, Spinach, Parsley, Apples, Blueberries, Vitamins & Minerals, Chicory Root Extract, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Chondroitin Sulfate, Dried Lactobacillus plantarum, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus Fermentation Products, Rosemary Extract.
