My boyfriend got me a magazine called Rat Terriers. This magazine is the best! Any way in it they talk of training your overly intelligent ratti to ring a bell when he/she has to go outside! The training seems very simple! 3 steps!
Many potty accidents happen when your pup cant get someones attention. This wont be a problem if you help your Rattie puppy learn to ring a belly when she/he needs to go out. Here's how...
1. Hang a bell at the puppies level from the handle of the door when you take your pup out to the potty area
2. Shake the string and ring the bell yourself each time before you open the door. Puppies connect events that happen together...so he/she soon will realize the bell ringing is related to the door opening. In a pup's logic, this means the bell makes the door open. within a week your pup probably will try to ring the bell herself.
3. When you hear it, hurry to the door, praising as you go, and take your puppy out to his/her potty area!
Now Hunters Daddy thought that wasnt such a good idea..hanging it directly off the door because every time someone comes in or leaves he/she will think its time to go potty so he said to hang it near the door you use to take him/her out and when you take him/her out to go potty you ring it..this way he/she will connect potty with bell ringing..
Im going to try this..if anyone else does please let me know how it went
Hey who knows right? After all if cats can go potty in the human toilet then why cant a smart dog like a Rattie learn to ring a belly to let us know when she/he has to go potty? Good luck

If it's the Rat Terrier magazine I'm thinking of (can buy it at petsmart/petco etc.) some of our dogs are in there in the back. There is an area of pictures (the last few pages) and Skittles was in there...although her/my name was put next to a different dog accidently. Skittles is the one with the blue harness with her head cocked
I have tried the bell thing with another dog and it worked. Skittles never took to the idea....too lazy to walk to the back door - just stares at me (and only me) until I let her out. |

Yes she does.....spoiled brat! Most of those pictures were current or former members of the forum. Someone posted a call for pictures for a magazine....and the ones that were excepted got a free print of it.
Not to worry - Hunter will have you wrapped even further around that little puppy paw real quick

Just look at Hunters little tummy!!! He's is SOOO cute!! And yep, they can learn to ring a bell if they don't already have us trained in some other way! Abby just goes to the back door and gives it a scratch. And she is in that magazine too! |

Daisy has me trained with the sit and stare method too And a low, rough little "woof" if I don't move fast enough (and I don't even get a treat )
Daisy is in the mag as well |

Mine all whine - except Skipper. He does this frantic running back and forth in the room like a little kid that has to go and can't keep still!
At least one member has used the bell method (might be Jan C./Katie's Mom), just shows how smart these little guys are! |

Hunter is adorable! I trained my rat terrier to a bell... but it was the kind that sits on the floor and they use their front paw to ring it (here's a link to the one I purchased)

I don't use it anymore though because Bailey got to where he thought it was a game, and was hitting it all the time. I was spending most of my time at home letting him in and out in and out in and out... until I said ENOUGH already! LOL
There are some forum members who use the type bell you refer to. Maybe one of them will respond. Good luck to you! |

| Yep--Bama has me trained with the same method Daisy used to train Tracey, and it is only me who he has trained. I swear, I don't know if he even goes to potty when it's just him and John at home. Bama doesn't think that John knows how to take him out to potty. |

I trained Mario with a bell... he got the hang of it very quickly. I don't need to use it anymore. He will sit and stare at me now... I guess he turned it around and trained me!! |

You're right MB. I trained KS to a bell. It worked great, but she did start to ring it all the time (of course, she wants to go out all the time!) |

Ooops, I didn't know that. Guess the one I sent you was of no use -- maybe you can pass it on to someone else! |

We did the potty training with the bell and it worked great!
We have one of those wire door stops right by our front door, so we hung the bell from that since it was so low to the ground and on her level. She was ringing the bell within a week but then started taking advantage and rang the bell ALL the time.
So I finally got tired of hearing the bell and took it down...what did she do? She hit the wire door stop and it makes a horrible vibrating noise...and now she still hits the door stop to this day, haha. At least now when she does it, she really does have to go outside or at least, usually! |

| It's a fun thing to teach your dog... but they do often get to the point where they think it's a game. They learn very quickly.. these little dogs... and learn that all they have to do is hit the bell and we're at their beckon call. It turns into a situation where they control us instead of us controlling them. I put my bell up. Bailey was driving me nuts with it! haha |
