THAT is my question!

I recently purchased the most beautiful Type A - UKC Registered male pup.  He is only 4 1/2 months old at this point, but I'm torn as to whether I should have him neutered or go ahead and attempt to breed him.

He has moved in with my family and we have 2 children (1 yr and 2 1/2 yr), and a 13 year old male pit bull.  This lil guy's temperament is phenomenal!!!

This is my first Rattie and I researched them long and hard before getting one.  I'm so glad I did that, because he is indeed an incredible family member.

Any advice on the breeding thing?

Thanks So much!!

You can post them under the photo forums. To resize them to under 500mb I use MS paint....sketch/skew option. Then you just upload it ....there are attachment areas where to do that in those forums. Let me know if that helps. To put up an avatar just make sure your photo ends with lowercase .jpg before you upload it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a Good Health plan for pets? I'm currently looking at the Banfield Optimum Wellness plan that will cover all his shots and for a higher monthly fee it will cover his nueter as well.
I'm still torn about whether or not I should have him Nuetered ... what kind of difference will it make in his being a good family pet if he is not?

I have heard that if he is not clipped, he will be harder to control and less responsive to training, is this true?

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again Everybody!!

I think those are part of the problem. Roaming could also be an issue. Whenever Jack is around another dog all he does is try to hump them now, male or female. It isn't dominance with him, it is totally a "male" thing. Also the health of the dog could suffer. They do have a higher incidence of cancer and prostate problems when they are not neutered.

Good Morning,

You have some time so, no need to rush. Although the earlier you neuter him the less likely he is to hike his leg. I also agree with Sarah that cancer is lessened.

If you wish to think a bit, here is my advice. Keep him on good food, keep him up to date on his shots and plan to get his OFA testing done. The full range of OFA testing can't be completed until a dog is 2 so you have some time. It's a good idea to also insist that any females your dog breeds have a brucellosis test....you my be ask to do the same with your boy.

Here are few links that might help... http://www.kndkennels.com/ofainfo.html  http://www.kndkennels.com/links.html

Good luck... breeding can be ruff  and even a heartbreaker

Thank you so much Darla!
This is some incredible information and I think I will go ahead and have him nueterd, and leave the breeding to the proffesionals. Maybe someday I'll think differently and I can add another family member at that time.

I really appreciate how helpful this site is for newbies like me!

This site is the best I'm glad you asked first and did a lot of research and soul-searching instead of just jumping in, as, unfortunately, so many people seem to do. We would still love to see a pic (or 100) of your rattie boy! Please stick around and post often.
